The Honduran Tea Set

Updated: Oct 1, 2019

Twenty years ago, as a very young college student, I took my first international trip to the small, impoverished but incredibly beautiful country of Honduras. It was a trip that changed my life. While there I purchased a handmade tea set in bold, brilliant colors which I have kept on display for almost two decades. I was so thrilled to own these pieces and knew that every time I used them, I would share stories of my travels and the people I had met. Months ago, I saw two cobalt blue bowls which I knew would match The Honduran Tea Set perfectly, a tea set that had never actually been used. Despite my good intentions, these pieces have done nothing but collect dust and are only discussed if someone happens to notice them in the china cabinet. I began to think about the treasure trove of memories that I have stored in various nooks of my home and all of the good intentions that I have had but not fulfilled. So, I decided to bring those intentions to life.

A simple Saturday morning tea using some beautiful sunflowers I had on the counter and a few petite fours I picked up at the grocery store. In less than five minutes the table was set and ready for conversations and memories to be made!

Let me first say that this blog is not about achieving perfection or other unrealistic standards. It is not about going to extreme lengths or exhausting yourself to put on airs for your friends, family or neighbors. As a wife and mother of two with a full-time career, I often eat dinner while standing over the kitchen sink and I do not have the time I would like for DIY projects. Life is busy. However, I know that these moments with my family are precious and are moving faster than I would like so-when I can-I try to make those Everyday Details (such as presentation, flavor, style or comfort) Matter. I may have grabbed a rotisserie chicken from Harris Teeter and a side dish off the hot bar for dinner but I can serve them on a nice platter and add a garnish. Sprucing up a guest room with fresh towels and chocolates on the pillow just before your guests arrive show them how much you are anticipating their visit. People always tell me "Don't make a fuss!" or "That is too much work!" The bottom line is that I like to make a fuss over those I love, especially when it is something that takes only a minute or two. That is what this blog is about-making life simply beautiful-in whatever way that makes sense for you. I hope to share ideas on a wide range of topics such as table settings, guest hospitality, home decor, recipes, event planning, etiquette, organizational tips, holidays, and more-all in a way which encourage you to make the Everyday Details Matter. The goal is not to be disappointed when our lives do not look like the front cover of a Southern Living magazine. We are going to use paper plates and grab fast food between after school activities. We are going to be rushed and overwhelmed and tired. But, when so inspired, let's find our Honduran Tea Sets, dust them off and share them with those who are gathered around our table. Maybe you use your wedding china on a random Tuesday rather than just every other Christmas. Perhaps you use a sprig of lavender (my favorite which we will definitely talk about one day!) to freshen up a guest room or living area. Whatever it is that you choose, be creative

and confident and encouraged to make the Everyday Details Matter through small touches to simply beautify your life.
