Make the Everyday Details Matter! Create your own master bedroom sanctuary.

Everyday Details Matter because they give us the opportunity to seize the moment and make it special. They can also help us to be more organized and more efficient. Years ago, I was inspired by a video I came across on YouTube. In this video, Admiral William H. McRaven gave a commencement speech about how a simple act like making your bed every day can change your outlook and get you on a path towards success.

“If you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

I wish I could say that I made my bed every day. That may be the plan but as a wife and working mom of two, I am happy to remember all necessary articles of clothing. Making the bed does not always happen. What I have noticed is that when I do make my bed my day seems to go better. Interesting that this one Everyday Detail can set the tone for the next 16 hours.

This personal revelation prompted me to spend time this summer creating an environment which would foster that behavior, one that would encourage me to make my bed on an (almost) daily basis. I needed a relaxing and comfortable space that reflected our personal style and that would keep us organized and clutter free. After much Pinterest browsing and lifestyle reflection, I had a sense of the details I wanted to incorporate into my bedroom: an accent wall, sconce-style bedside lamps, a vanity area for myself, a coffee and tea station, a place to curl up with a favorite read, and a nook for my husband complete with a gentleman’s chest and club chair.

I started my DIY adventure by visiting Sherwin Williams and falling in love with Slate Tile (SW 7624), the color that would pop on the decorative wall behind my bed. Next stop was Rooms To Go where we were beyond excited to find our gorgeous Lake Town Gray furniture. This collection has proven to be the perfect complement to our color palette and boasts a simple but elegant style. One final trip to Lowe’s Home Improvement and we had everything we needed to finish the project. Oh, and check out these great wall sconce lamps! I love the sophistication that they add to the overall look and that they provide more surface area on top of my nightstands.

In a matter of a weekend, I received the chance to tryout my reno skills, spent some time with my husband, and watched our collaborative efforts turn into a beautiful new bedroom. Despite our still hectic morning schedule, I am now more motivated than ever to make my bed and keep the feel of my charming sanctuary neat and tidy. I cannot tell you how much this Everyday Detail Matters to me!

Going back to the very wise Admiral, I encourage you to take notice of the little things. Making your bed does not guarantee any type of joy, happiness, fame or fortune but realizing that the Everyday Details Matter can help prepare you for whatever the day will bring.
