Autumn is without a doubt my favorite season. Winter can be rough, spring allergies are a torment, and I have never cared for the heat of summer but I adore the sights and sounds of autumn, especially in my great state of North Carolina. There is a wonderful change in the air when fall approaches and it is not just a light breeze or cooler temperatures. It is as if you can smell the leaves changing and the bonfires blazing. The moment that I notice that aroma, I know it is time for fall recipes, fall activities, and fall decor.
For years, I decorated my home in earth tones all year long-beautiful tans and dark woods with accents of burnished orange, mossy green and rich shades of red. Decorating for the autumn season just meant adding a few pumpkins and a strand of leaf garland here and there. As my style has changed to match the popular color palette of grays and blues, it has been rather exciting to see more and more fall decor options to compliment my personal tastes (and not having to completely redo my color scheme saves my wallet!). A quick trip to stores like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Home Goods now tempt me with gorgeous displays of cornflower, navy, sky and teal. So as the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop, I say "Bring on the Fall Blues!"
Festive Florals My first suggestion is to look at your florals. There are several fall flowers that cover the blue spectrum on the color scale including The Chinese Bellflower, Michaelmas Daisies (hardy asters which actually bloom in response to the shortening days just like mums), Pansies (popular annuals that can endure cooler temperatures) and Blue Sky Flowers.
You can create simple arrangements for side tables or nestle these delights around your home.
While I love fresh flowers, they can prove to be costly and I do not have a green thumb so instead I add pops of blue with silks like these lovely hydrangeas or budded vines.
Gorgeous Gourds Growing up I do not remember seeing any color pumpkin other than orange. Even white pumpkins escaped my attention until I was much older. Now, we have the option to decorate with blue pumpkins, especially ones with silver and gold accents. It definitely gives a whole new meaning to "The Fall Blues!" Fortunately, orange is a great compliment to blue so I have saved a few loved pieces to scatter here and there.
I have found that when decorating for a season (Christmas of course being the exception to the rule), I just need to vignette a couple of places in my home to achieve a desired look. The main places that I try to visit are the fireplace mantle, dining room table and sideboard, front foyer table, and a couple things on the kitchen island.
I have coined my style as Modern French Cottage with just a touch of Farmhouse. The blue accents that you see provide a light. calming feel to our living spaces and I love that I can now carry that on throughout the fall season.
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to do a "Monday Blues" social media post focusing on how to incorporate blues into your interior design scheme. My friend and colleague, Pam Craig-VP of Design for Homes By Dickerson, wrote the following excerpt which I wanted to share:
"Blues will continue to enjoy a prominent place in interiors as we move from the dog days of summer into the cooler months of fall. These are the colors of the sky, the deep murky depths of the ocean, our favorite pair of jeans. Blues represent tranquility and comfort but can be both fun and fresh in the lighter tones as well as smooth and sophisticated in the moody darker tones. Blues mix well with most wood stains and look great with golds, bronze, and silver accents. Blues are being seen in everything from tile to cabinets and in color ranges from Teal to deep Navy. Give in to the Monday Blues – but in a good way by making them part of your color palette!"
What are your favorite ways to incorporate "The Fall Blues" into your home?
